Abstract
This chapter examines Stalin's consolidation of power, his commitment to revolutionary transformation, and the scholarly debates surrounding Stalinism and totalitarian rule. It analyses the Great Turn by looking at rapid industrialization, collectivization, class warfare, famine, economic mobilization, and social dislocation produced by the Five-Year Plans. The chapter evaluates Soviet society by discussing labour discipline, gender policy, nationalism, education, urban planning, and the contradictory experiences of workers, peasants, and women under state control. It also explores socialist realism, architecture, science, scholarship, and cultural regulation, showing how the regime directed artistic expression and intellectual life towards ideological conformity. Finally, the chapter investigates the Great Purge, the Gulag, political terror, and Stalin's cult of personality while explaining how coercion, propaganda, ambition, and collective belief sustain the Stalinist system during the interwar Soviet period.
