Abstract
This chapter examines the reign of Alexander I and highlights the contradictions that defined his personality, political ideals, and imperial rule. It explains how Enlightenment education, liberal aspirations, and administrative reforms encouraged hopes for constitutional government while preserving autocracy, serfdom, and bureaucratic authority throughout Russia. The chapter describes Russia's wars against Napoleon, territorial expansion across Europe and the Caucasus, the Patriotic War of 1812, and Alexander's influential role at the Congress of Vienna and within the Holy Alliance. It also analyses the emperor's later conservatism, military settlements, growing mysticism, and deepening suspicion of reform during the postwar period. Finally, the chapter traces the emergence of the Decembrist rebellion, whose unsuccessful uprising reveals elite dissatisfaction with autocracy and the limited development of Russian liberalism under early nineteenth-century imperial rule.
