Abstract
This chapter examines the cultural revival of appanage Rus after Mongol devastation, emphasising literary production, religious debate, travel writing, and the emergence of proto-national ideas through accounts of Kulikovo and political unity. It explains how the Orthodox Church preserved social cohesion, influenced morality, expanded monastic authority, and generated disputes between possessors and non-possessors over wealth, spirituality, and political power. The chapter describes developments in wooden and stone architecture, including tent churches, the Moscow Kremlin, and Italian Renaissance influences encouraged by Ivan III. It also analyses icon painting, especially the achievements of Andrei Rublev and Dionysus, alongside limited education, monastic learning, and surviving traditions of popular entertainment. Finally, the chapter presents religion, art, and culture as central forces in the cultural and political development of late medieval Rus.
