Abstract
This chapter examines how the Bolsheviks established a revolutionary state under Vladimir Lenin, balanced ideals of mass participation with authoritarian control, and consolidated power after the October revolution. It explains how the civil war, foreign intervention, and nationalist movements intensified violence, strengthened the Red Army, and enabled the Bolsheviks to secure control across the former Russian Empire while deepening ideological divisions within Soviet society and the Communist Party. The chapter analyses war communism, economic collapse, social experimentation, and widespread unrest, all of which compelled the leadership to introduce the New Economic Policy. It also evaluates debates over industrialization, party authority, nationality policy, and Soviet international relations after Lenin's death. Finally, the chapter traces Stalin's political approach, defeat of rival factions, and promotion of socialism in one country as the foundations of a new Soviet order.
