Abstract
This chapter examines the Christianization of Kyivan Rus, explaining how pagan traditions, Byzantine influence, monastic leadership, and the canonization of rulers reshaped religion, politics, culture, and social values. It describes the emergence of Church Slavonic literacy, oral folklore, heroic byliny, chronicles, sermons, and the Lay of Igor's Campaign , which promoted unity, martial honour, and devotion to the land of Rus. The chapter also analyses wooden and stone architecture, cathedral construction, mosaics, frescoes, icon painting, and decorative arts, emphasising the adaptation of Byzantine forms into regional traditions. It further discusses education, literacy, monastic scholarship, and foreign cultural exchanges that strengthened Kyivan intellectual and artistic development. Finally, the chapter portrays Kyivan Rus as a dynamic civilization that integrated multiple cultural influences while cultivating enduring religious, literary, artistic, and political traditions.
