Abstract
This chapter examines Soviet foreign policy, the rise of fascism, and the collapse of collective security as Stalin's government confronted Nazi expansion through diplomacy and the Nazi–Soviet Pact. It describes the German invasion of 1941, the sieges and battles at Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk, and the Soviet counteroffensives that destroyed the Third Reich with Allied assistance. The chapter analyses wartime devastation, mass death, deportations, ethnic persecution, and the harsh experiences of Soviet nationalities under both Nazi occupation and Stalinist control. It also evaluates wartime diplomacy among the Soviet Union, Britain, and the United States through conferences, disputes over Poland, and the creation of post-war settlements and institutions. Finally, the chapter assesses Soviet military failures, economic mobilization, nationalism, propaganda, resistance, and Nazi brutality as decisive factors that ultimately shaped Soviet victory and political legitimacy.
