Abstract
This chapter examines Russia's eighteenth-century economy and society by stressing imperial expansion, growth, and the contradictory strengthening of serfdom under Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. It describes the rural economy by contrasting southern barshchina agriculture, cattle raising, and expanding grain exports with northern obrok practices, seasonal migration, handicrafts, and persistent agricultural backwardness. The chapter analyses industrial development through the rapid growth of factories, mining, metallurgy, textiles, possessional labour, manorial factories, and increasingly capitalistic labour relations. It also explains the expansion of domestic and foreign trade through canals, fairs, Baltic and Black Sea ports, and commercial exchanges with Europe, Central Asia, India, and China. Finally, the chapter introduces the changing social structure that emerged from Russia's expanding imperial and economic development.
