Abstract
This chapter examines Lithuania's rise from a collection of Baltic tribes into a powerful multiethnic state that absorbed extensive Rus territories, adopted Kyivan administrative traditions, and contested Muscovy for regional supremacy under rulers such as Gediminas, Algirdas, and Vytautas. It explains how dynastic unions with Poland, especially Jogailo's marriage to Jadwiga and the Union of Lublin, accelerated Polonization, strengthened Catholic influence and established the aristocratic Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. The chapter analyses the Commonwealth's constitutional structure, noble liberties, ethnic tensions, and unequal balance of power between Poland, Lithuania, and Orthodox Slavic populations. It also contrasts Lithuania's decentralized political order with Moscow's autocracy while examining the social, religious, and linguistic forces that shaped eastern Europe. Finally, the chapter evaluates competing interpretations of the inheritance of Kyivan Rus and traces the emergence of Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian identities.
