Abstract
Abstract This chapter focuses on guiding the young autistic adult (YAA) to link their primary goals in the STEPS program with purposeful social interactions. It emphasizes building friendships and expanding social networks that align with individual objectives rather than providing conventional social skills training. The chapter encourages YAAs to identify personally motivating reasons for social engagement, practice non-verbal reciprocal communication, and make thoughtful decisions about when and how to disclose their autism diagnosis or needs. It also outlines ways supporters can assist by facilitating practice opportunities, engaging in discussions about disclosure, and reviewing related materials on adult relationships. Finally, the chapter reinforces the importance of authentic social connection and self-determined decision-making in sharing personal information.
