Abstract
Abstract This chapter introduces the initial stage of the STEPS program, which orients young autistic adults (YAAs) by explaining its purpose, structure, and expectations. It emphasizes helping the YAA feel comfortable with the provider while fostering a sense of ownership over their participation, with the coach serving as a supportive partner rather than the primary focus. The chapter guides the YAA in identifying personal goals related to independence, relationships, education, and employment, while exploring how self-knowledge, self-regulation, and self-determination promote goal attainment and life satisfaction. It highlights the completion of Worksheet 1.3: Needs Assessment as a central activity that informs subsequent modules by clarifying the YAA’s strengths, challenges, and priorities. Finally, the chapter underscores collaboration among the YAA, coach, and provider in setting goals, maintaining engagement, and building a foundation for the entire STEPS program.
