Abstract
Abstract This chapter focuses on helping the young autistic adult (YAA) develop awareness of emotional states and apply healthy strategies for managing stress. It emphasizes identifying emotions such as distress or anxiety and recognizing how these feelings connect to specific thoughts and reactions. The chapter guides the YAA in practicing strategies to manage unhelpful thoughts, including acknowledging them without judgment and allowing them to pass naturally. It also encourages supporters to review communication materials and engage in open, supportive dialogue with the YAA without applying pressure. Finally, the chapter highlights the importance of preparing the first immersion experience by collaboratively sharing ideas and suggestions with the YAA and their provider.
