Abstract
The European and American guidelines offer recommendations for the management of antithrombotic medication following mitral valve interventions. Evidence to support recommendations is frequently extrapolated from studies of aortic valve procedures, despite thrombotic risk being substantially higher in mitral valve disease and mitral valve procedures. This review examines the pathophysiological basis for thrombosis in mitral valve conditions, the recommendations and evidence from the guidelines and current uncertainties.
