Implementing a site coordinator model for specialty pharmacy advanced pharmacy practice experiences

PURPOSE: This publication outlines the development and evaluation of a standardized, site-coordinated advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) education program at a health-system specialty pharmacy (HSSP) aimed at addressing inequalities and deficiencies in the preexisting HSSP APPE programming. SUMMARY: For the 2024-2025 academic year, the HSSP introduced a pharmacist site coordinator model to centralize and streamline the Specialty APPE Education Program (SPAEP) to improve consistency, efficiency, and support for both preceptors and students. The site coordinator manages all existing and newly implemented core components of the SPAEP, including orientation, specialty topic series presentations, disease state topic discussions, mock interviews, journal clubs, and final presentations. This model emphasizes a structured program while promoting student and preceptor engagement and mentorship. Additionally, several structural changes were made to the program, incorporating evidence-based learning techniques and learner-driven content. Student and preceptor feedback was collected and demonstrated overall satisfaction with the SPAEP. CONCLUSION: Implementation of the SPAEP with a dedicated site coordinator showed promise to contribute to student success and support preceptor needs. The utilization of a site coordinator for APPEs within an HSSP can help with both operational efficiency and support of student learning needs. This descriptive note can guide future program enhancements, and the SPAEP model can help inform other institutions developing or improving APPE education programs.
