Abstract
Abstract “Historiography” is a term that historians often use in lieu of what other scholarly fields would call a literature review, namely a summary of earlier scholarship on the subject at hand, an examination of past debates, and discussions of the current state of knowledge. This introductory chapter consists of two main parts. The first shows how modern Greek history and historiography emerged and developed, what methods it has developed and how these methods have evolved over time, how the major schools of history and historiographical fields have developed, and how these fields are juxtaposed with international trends. The second part shows how The Oxford Handbook of Modern Greek History departs from previous histories of modern Greece, situating modern Greek history within a broad and deep international setting, describing the current state of knowledge, and presenting what is new in the field of modern Greek history. It seeks to help international readers appreciate how the production of the history of modern Greece in Greece and abroad has broken new ground by emphasizing elements and topics that previous accounts have neglected while also retelling stories from the points of view of different characters, yielding new knowledge and challenging existing conceptual frameworks. In that respect, this volume utilizes methodological tools, and often adopts a multidisciplinary approach, that offer invaluable studies in many fields, including the history of minorities; gender studies; emigration, immigration, and diaspora studies; the history of science; social and economic history; the history of institutions; the arts; popular culture; and literature.
