Abstract
Abstract This chapter concerns the nature of Russell’s logical atomism and its relation to modality. After noting the significance of Russell’s logical atomism (§1), the author reviews the standard interpretation of logical atomism as a search for logical atoms (§2). Then the author presents a revisionist interpretation of logical atomism as a search for logical forms (§3). Having treated the what is it? question concerning Russell’s logical atomism, its relation to modality is critically considered: the author discusses Russell’s quantificational account of modal notions and develops a modal logic using Russell’s 1914 theory of perspectives (§4). This modal logic without primitive modalities exemplifies the logical atomist’s eliminative philosophical method.
