Abstract
Abstract This chapter lays out how the notion of sustainability has been integrated into the Solvency II regulation and other regulations relevant for insurers, pointing out that sustainability was already part of Solvency II and of the practice of insurers. It explains the notion of sustainability in economic and financial terms, with all its challenging facets from a regulatory viewpoint, and the novel penetration of sustainability into the realm of finance. The chapter also explains the distinctive institutional process the European Commission has chosen, as this process has substantively shaped the outcome that insurers face today. After explaining the possible implications of specifically introducing the notion of sustainability in Solvency II, the chapter concludes with an appraisal of the approach taken and the outcome achieved.
