Abstract
Abstract The international activities of market participants like insurance and reinsurance undertakings have grown over the last decade. This is leading to increasing challenges for home and host supervisors and for the respective cross-border cooperation between them. This chapter deals with a selected set of issues in the context of cross-border cooperation of supervisory authorities in Europe. It will become clear that risk information is key for an efficient cross border cooperation. Therefore, the chapter is structured in a way that it sheds light on the fragmented European markets to illustrate the background of possible challenges. It deals with the EU legal framework and the Solvency II Directive as the current starting point for supervisory cooperation in the internal market, the instruments and procedures to support cooperation, the features of supervisory cooperation, the role of EIOPA, and a selection of information needs for cooperation. The chapter also covers the current developments resulting from the review of the Solvency II Directive with the aim of improving and strengthening international cooperation in the future.
