Abstract
Abstract This chapter addresses the resilience of insurance companies and the insurance sector as a whole. Resilience is depicted as a core element of risk management that helps explain the coexistence of measures aimed at fostering the survival of insurance companies and protecting policyholders in cases of financial distress or insolvency. Resilience is not an end in itself but rather a characteristic that contributes to the main goal of providing reliable insurance coverage. The chapter assigns the three dimensions of resilience—persistence, adaptation, and transformation—to the provisions of the three pillars of Solvency II and the Insurance Recovery and Resolution Directive (IRRD), and discusses resilience measures at both the company and macro levels, as well as their interdependencies. This creates the basis for determining an optimal mix of resilience dimensions from a company and supervisory perspective.
