Abstract
Abstract nhvThe chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the objectives and key advantages and disadvantages of solvency regulation for insurance companies and insurance groups. After explaining the general quantitative concepts and risk measures, the chapter lays down the specific solvency rules applied in Switzerland (Swiss Solvency Test) and the European Union (Solvency II). The primary focus of the chapter is on the quantitative requirements at the legal entity and group level. The major differences between these two approaches are examined and potential further improvements are discussed. In addition, the implications of different risk measures and confidence levels used in both frameworks and their impact on capital requirements are explored.
