Abstract
Abstract The South-eastern European (SEE) countries’ path towards the European Union (EU) is marked by significant reforms required to prepare the domestic markets for integration into the EU Single Market. The most important reform related to integrating SEE insurance markets into the EU insurance market is the transition from Solvency I to Solvency II. However, the SEE insurance markets are far from homogenous as they differ regarding the set-up of insurance supervision, the extent of the presence of EU-related foreign affiliates, and market specificities. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the challenges and opportunities brought by Solvency II for SEE insurance markets by reflecting on these differences. The analysis covers the SEE insurance markets, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia, and addresses the potential impact of Solvency II on insurance supervision, insurance undertakings, and insurance markets.
