Abstract
Abstract In 2024, the UK implemented a major package of reforms to Solvency II, introducing the ‘Solvency UK’ framework. These changes marked a deliberate departure from the European regime, aiming to tailor insurance regulation more closely to the UK market. This chapter outlines the key reforms, explains the rationale behind them, and describes how they are being implemented. It discusses the structural features of the UK insurance sector that made reform desirable, and highlights the political and economic context in which the changes occurred. Particular attention is paid to the matching adjustment and risk margin, both of which were central to the reform debate. The chapter also considers the role of the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and the broader implications of the reforms for investment, competitiveness, and policyholder protection. In doing so, it provides a comprehensive overview of the UK’s post-Brexit approach to insurance regulation.
