Abstract
Abstract This chapter reflects on the main conceptual, regulatory, and enforcement achievements; challenges; and future opportunities of EU gender equality law. Taking a bird’s-eye view by adopting both an internal perspective (‘law in the books’) and an external perspective (focusing on the role the law plays in changing or sustaining existing social relations), this chapter offers a nuanced assessment of the field. It argues that the overarching conceptual, material, and practical challenge is to develop EU gender equality law capable of reaching structural forms of inequality. Aiming to provide inspiration for a new generation of EU gender equality law, the chapter identifies conceptual and material building blocks to better address structural gender equality, offering concrete suggestions as to how regulation and enforcement may be strengthened.
