Abstract
Abstract This introductory chapter outlines the focus, aim, sources, scope, and methodology of the book. The chapter begins by situating the EU gender equality law framework within its broader societal context, emphasizing that gender inequality in Europe is structural. The aim of the book is accordingly twofold. The first aim is to provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of the EU gender equality law framework, from a socio-historical and conceptual perspective, as well as with a focus on implementation and enforcement. The second aim is to explore how EU gender equality law can better contribute to dismantling structural inequalities and to identify both the legal obstacles and the opportunities in this regard. The chapter explains that to fulfil these aims, the authors used a contextual approach, conceptually grounded in feminist legal theory and human rights law, with attention to the implementation of EU gender equality law in practice.
