Abstract
Lay Summary Feeding broiler chickens with less protein and fewer amino acids can reduce feed costs, but it may also harm growth and gut health because the birds cannot use nutrients efficiently. This study evaluated whether adding a multi-protease enzyme to these lower-nutrient diets could help chickens grow and remain healthy. A total of 2,250 one-day-old male broiler chicks were fed different diets, including a nutritionally adequate diet and diets with reduced protein and amino acids, with or without the enzyme. Birds that received the reduced diets without the enzyme showed poorer growth. However, when the multi-protease was added at adequate levels, their performance returned to the same level as birds fed the standard diet. Although carcass yield was not affected, the enzyme improved the structure of the intestine. The intestinal lining became taller and healthier, which increases the ability to absorb nutrients. In addition, the number of beneficial bacteria increased, indicating a healthier gut environment. In summary, adding a multi-protease enzyme helps broiler chickens make better use of diets with lower protein and amino acid levels. This strategy can maintain animal performance and support gut health, which may contribute to more efficient and sustainable poultry production.
