Abstract
Chloroplasts are essential photosynthetic organelles characterized by membrane systems uniquely enriched in galactolipids rather than phospholipids. Beyond their structural roles in providing the framework for membrane lipid bilayers, galactolipids are integral components of photosynthetic protein complexes and undergo dynamic remodeling in response to environmental stresses including light, phosphate deprivation, temperature extremes, and drought. Furthermore, recent studies have demonstrated that altering the ratio of the major galactolipids alone is sufficient to reshape chloroplast morphology. This review examines how galactolipids shape both the physical architecture and functional capacity of chloroplasts, and it discusses additional possible processes such as chloroplast division and movement that may also involve lipid-mediated regulations.
