Abstract
Lay Summary Mastitis is one of the most frequent health problems in dairy cows and a big source of frustration for farmers. It is an inflammation of the udder that can either show clear signs (clinical mastitis) or go unnoticed while silently reducing milk yield and quality (subclinical mastitis). Even though farmers deal with it on a daily basis, the real economic impact is not always obvious. In our study, we worked with dairy farms in Northwest Spain to calculate these costs. Over one year, we followed more than 8,000 cows, collecting milk records and farm economic data to calculate the losses derived from culling and mortality, reduced milk production, impaired reproductive performance, additional veterinary and labor costs, and discarded milk. We found that, on average, mastitis costs each farm over €31,600 a year (∼€261 per cow). Most of these losses came from subclinical mastitis, the hidden form of the disease that often goes undetected. These results show how of prevention and early identification of mastitis cases in dairy herds. By doing so, farmers can protect both their animals’ health and the economic sustainability of their farms.
