Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores Article 33 of the ICDR Rules, which prescribes the basic requirements for the time, form, and effect of any ICDR arbitral award. Article 33 does not provide a comprehensive list of requirements for a valid award; rather, it prescribes certain general minimum standards, while also giving some deference to the potential application of the parties’ agreement and the specific demands of the law at the place of arbitration or where enforcement is sought. The chapter situates Article 33 within the broader framework of international arbitral practice and comparable institutional rules, tracing its evolution and underlying policy objectives. It provides detailed commentary on the requirements that awards be written, reasoned, final, and binding; rendered within prescribed time limits; signed, dated, and located at the seat of arbitration; reviewed administratively; and, where required, registered under applicable law.
