Abstract
Abstract This chapter develops the micro-foundations of a causal-narrative framework by identifying the cross-network social mechanisms that generate organizational inventions in Renaissance Florence. It outlines how the overlay architecture of economic, kinship, and political networks creates the raw material for these inventions and guides the evolution of elite structures. The chapter elaborates on the concepts of recombination and catalysis by applying them to empirical cases that reveal how social interactions recombine practices, protocols, and cognitive categories. It demonstrates how exogenous shocks, such as wars and revolts, interact with internal network dynamics to trigger chain reactions that transform traditional structures into innovative organizational forms. Finally, the chapter illustrates how the interplay of these mechanisms produces autocatalytic network regimes that continuously reshape social hierarchies and historical legacies.
