Abstract
Abstract This book presents Padgett’s main articles on evolving Florentine economic, political, and social networks, published over the last 30 years and spanning the period from 1265 to 1500. Padgett and his research team have compiled a comprehensive quantitative database of approximately 100,000 individuals from primary archival documents. The book argues that novel organizational forms in business, politics, and kinship emerge from crosscutting network interconnections. It arranges empirical chapters on economic business, political factions, and kinship in chronological order to highlight causality and feedback among these streams. Padgett integrates a historical overview with a theoretical framework of network recombination and catalysis to deepen the understanding of these processes. Finally, the book demonstrates how such historical recombination drives innovation across diverse social networks.
