Abstract
Abstract Bulk XANES measurements of manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) ions in the C-type asteroid Ryugu sample showed that these ions were predominantly partitioned into pyrrhotite and other sulfide minerals, with their affinity for these ions increasing in the order Mn2+ < Zn2+ < Cu2+. This trend is consistent with the Irving-Williams series (Mn2+< Zn2+< Cu2+). This suggests that the partitioning of transition metal ions on Ryugu sample was governed by complexation reactions following the Irving-Williams series.
