Abstract
Abstract Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been used to probe the molecular structure of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C: H or HAC) nanoparticles. Using the known aromatic infrared bands (AIBs) as a template for comparison with SERS spectra, it is apparent that many of the molecular groups that produce these bands as well as the carbonaceous absorption bands in the diffuse interstellar medium are present in a-C: H nanoparticles. As these particles are thought to decompose through the elimination of a limited range of relatively small molecules when exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation, these data support a model in which the AIB emission can be associated with molecular fragments created during the dissolution of a-C: H nanoparticles.
