Abstract
Abstract Small-bandgap semiconducting oligomers and polymers composed of quinoidal naphtho[1,2-b:5,6-b']dipyrrol-2,7-dione acceptor units and oligothiophene donor units were synthesized. Comparison with a phenyl-substituted reference showed that flanking thiophene units adjacent to the highly π-extended quinoidal core are crucial for efficient donor–acceptor interactions, leading to near-infrared absorption, small bandgaps down to 0.97 eV, and ambipolar carrier transport.
