Abstract
Multiple myeloma is a known risk factor for skin cancer. However, the impact of its precursor, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), on this risk is unknown. Our objectives were to characterize the relationship of MGUS with the frequency and relative survival of skin cancer. Data for this study were acquired from the iStopMM study, a nationwide screening study for MGUS; and the Icelandic Cancer Registry, a national database that records all histologically confirmed skin cancers diagnosed in Iceland. A multivariable regression analysis adjusting for age and sex did not identify a difference in the frequency of skin cancer, and survival analyses did not identify a difference between groups. Although MGUS is the precursor condition for multiple myeloma, we did not identify an association between MGUS and skin cancer.
