Abstract
In this multicenter retrospective study of 117 allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (231 topical 5-fluorouracil exposures), topical 5-fluorouracil was generally well tolerated, with no systemic adverse effects and only one site-specific cutaneous graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) flare (0.4% of exposures). The single flare occurred in the setting of extensive field therapy and concurrent GVHD risk factors, suggesting that topical 5-fluorouracil carries a very low risk of triggering cutaneous GVHD when used judiciously in clinically stable patients.
