Abstract
Abstract Archaeometry is the application of techniques from the physical, chemical, and geological sciences to archaeological materials and sites. The scientific techniques from these disciplines are being used to investigate prehistoric human activity, locate and date new archaeological sites, determine the provenance of artifacts, preserve archaeological remains, and so on. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, archaeometric studies in South America have exhibited tremendous growth. Geophysical prospection techniques are expanding the number of known archaeological sites using survey methods such as remote sensing. Thousands of artifacts are being analyzed each year by chemical analytical methods—both laboratory-based and portable. A few South American universities have initiated training programs for students in chemical analysis, dating, and preservation. As these programs have grown, the number of congresses presenting new studies have become more frequent. The strongest evidence for the increased maturity of archaeometric studies in South America is demonstrated by the growing number of publications in which the leading authors are more frequently from South America.
