Abstract
Abstract This chapter synthesizes the current state of knowledge of archaeological research along the Orinoco River undertaken since 2000. It discusses new findings, including rock art, ranging from the early Holocene (10,500 BP) as well as new lithic artifacts from the Archaic period and recent research projects focusing on the ceramic production and the configuration of groups in Formative, precolonial, and early colonial periods, covering the lower Orinoco and middle Orinoco regions. This chapter summarizes and compares the exciting new research avenues that have been explored in this region of northern South America, highlighting promising opportunities to rewrite early population processes and interaction with other areas of the Amazon basin and the Caribbean. The chapter closes with a reflection on avenues for future research in the Orinoco region.
