Abstract
Abstract Mexico is experiencing a continuous and accelerated aging process. A main concern is that social security is showing financial unsustainability. Reforms transforming pensions from institutional defined benefits to defined contributions in individual savings will not be conducive to suitable pensions. Non-contributory pensions are gaining relevance. Programs for the well-being of the elderly have been activated, aiming to improve the economic condition of the elderly population. But the monthly support provided is obviously insufficient. This chapter analyzes social security and welfare for the elderly as part of social protection. It is seeking to be a launching pad to suggest public programs and household support to help in the economic security of the elderly. This study expects to help in suggesting solutions within the foreseen demographic, socioeconomic, and health conditions of the aging population.
