Abstract
Abstract Over the past two decades, an upsurge in historical archaeological research has explored the mining and other extractive industries that lay at the heart of early Iberian colonialism in South America. This chapter outlines a critical synthesis of this research, much of which currently remains fragmented across national and linguistic lines, and connects it both to contemporary historiography on the colonial period and to discussions concerning the continent’s current extractive boom. In an overview of three key regions of investigation—northern South America, the central and southern Andes, and Brazil—the chapter examines recent archaeological research on the colonial extraction and processing of gold and silver as well as a broader swath of forest and marine resources. Several areas of specific archaeological insight are highlighted, including deeper preconquest histories of extraction, informal actors and economies, the connection of production and consumption through materials and landscapes, and the environmental legacies of extraction.
