Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines the historical and musical evolution of National Panorama arrangements in Trinidad and Tobago, situating the competition within carnival season, community collaboration, and Pan Trinbago’s regulatory framework while emphasizing its global significance. It traces the Pioneering Period (1963–1978), emphasizing early experimentation in steelpan construction and arranging, localized ensemble identities, and foundational works such as Anthony Williams’ “Dan Is the Man in the Van,” which establish core Panorama conventions. The chapter analyzes the Classic Period (1980–1999), demonstrating how arrangers expand formal length, reharmonization, motivic development, and audience engagement through landmark arrangements like Clive Bradley’s “Rebecca” (1983). It outlines the Pan Tunes Period (2000–2015), showing how original compositions written specifically for Panorama enable heightened virtuosity and closer alignment with adjudication criteria, as illustrated by Len “Boogsie” Sharpe’s works. Finally, the chapter examines the Soca Craze Period (2016–present), highlighting a return to popular soca selections, expanded production values, and renewed audience accessibility while affirming Panorama’s continued musical innovation and cultural relevance.
