Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides a critical analysis of the evidence for transcranial electric current stimulation (tDCS)–based cognitive enhancement in healthy adults. After a brief historical overview of electric brain stimulation, the chapter outlines the mechanistic principles of tDCS. The text discusses the impact of design factors, such as electrode montage, stimulation intensity and duration, number of sessions, and timing relative to cognitive tasks on experimental outcomes. It highlights key methodological challenges in the field of tDCS-based cognitive enhancement, including the high variability of tDCS effects and the role of individual factors, such as brain anatomy and baseline cognitive state, in shaping this variability. The chapter reviews the effects of single versus multisession protocols and examines the implications of unsupervised home use. Finally, it concludes with recommendations for future research, emphasizing standardized protocols and neuroimaging-informed studies to elucidate mechanisms and improve the reproducibility of tDCS effects on cognition.
