Abstract
Abstract This brief introduction to the volume discusses contested definitions of “Puritanism,” and it offers an analysis of the different stresses in the recent historiography. While some authors have proposed sharp distinctions between Puritans and “Anglican” supporters of the established episcopal church, others have suggested there was a broad Protestant consensus on many important issues, before the upheavals of the 1640s at least. Here, Puritanism is presented as a fluid and interactive phenomenon but one recognizable to contemporaries. One this basis the introduction establishes the geographical, chronological parameters of the Handbook and outlines the main themes of the chapters.
