Abstract
Abstract This chapter offers a detailed overview of contemporary Islamic progressivism. It first differentiates between progressive Islam and liberal Islam, arguing that the former is much more critical of modernity and social inequalities than the latter, which tends to prioritize limited government and individual rights. The middle sections of this chapter discuss in greater detail progressive Islam’s reformist approaches to ijtihād and primary Islamic source interpretation, along with its more radical commitments to social justice, pluralism, and gender equality. It also gives a brief overview of progressive Islam’s various organizational and institutional manifestations over the past half century. The chapter’s concluding section articulates some of the major critiques that have been levied against progressive Islam by traditional Muslims, which have primarily focused on progressive Islam’s postmodernist textual hermeneutics, left-wing social stances, and unorthodox and often unclear underlying theological commitments.
