Abstract
Abstract The lithic technology developed by human groups older than 11,300 cal BP is reviewed based on the current information available for South America. During the Last Glacial Maximum the data is still fragmentary and scarce. Subsequently, in the postglacial period, between ~16,000 and 13,500 cal BP, there is a small set of sites, ones suggesting a simple retouched flake product of an unsophisticated technology; others present rough bifacial lithic reduction with lanceolate points and the use of raw materials of medium to low quality (basalt, quartzite, etc.). Between ~13,000 and 12,200 cal BP there are significant increases in the number of sites, and complex and sophisticated bifacial Fishtail technology emerges with a series of technological innovations. During the next millennium, ~12,000 cal BP, there is a wide stylistic diversification in the design of projectile points (Paiján, Tigre, Punta Negra, Tambillo, etc.) and lithic technologies. This chapter discusses the social value of technology that could serve as social symbols of individual prestige. In addition, it suggests that some post-Fishtail technologies circulated at a supra-regional level between the Atlantic and Pacific slopes.
