Abstract
Abstract The Formative period on the western slope of the Andes has particularities that set it apart from the traditional conceptualizations of the Neolithic process. Here, sedentary life, the incorporation of crops, and pottery production are not contemporary or simultaneous processes. Sedentarism is not necessarily concomitant with a village lifestyle; the incorporation of crops does not diminish the relevance of wild resources; and pottery had many origins and functions and was also used by hunter-gatherers. Although incorporating crops, in the Semiarid North, Central, and South-Central Chile, the dispersed settlement of the domestic units was the main pattern, together with the persistence of the hunter-gatherer way of life in the mountain range until colonial times. At the other side of the Andes, such as in different parts of Northern Chile, Tarapacá was extensively inhabited by small domestic and productive units, where a few villages articulated the social, political, and ceremonial life of these dispersed communities. Therefore, the western Andean slope offers a diverse panorama of the socioeconomic changes during the Formative period and elements to contribute to a critical point of view of the American Neolithization processes
