Abstract
Abstract Chapter 2 discusses measures that assess the separation of individuals from distinct social groups at a fine-grained spatial scale. It compares measurement along two dimensions, one based on the analytical lens used to assess segregation (whether through partitioning, sequencing, or geospatial location) and the other based on whether segregation occurs at an aggregate or disaggregate level. Considering these dimensions, the chapter evaluates the properties of six different types of measures, using both hypothetical scenarios and empirical applications to Black and white residential patterns within the historical United States. The discussion highlights research scenarios where some measures might be preferred over others.
