Abstract
Abstract The past decades have seen a great expansion of the goals and methods applied to zooarchaeological research in South America, and the academic literature has diversified in many directions. As a case in point, we analyze the recent advances in the zooarchaeology of South American camelids, a group of animals that have held great importance and significance for ancient and modern hunting and pastoralist societies. We have seen some traditional approaches reformulated, while new frames of reference have improved the accuracy of our instruments of measurement. The research strategies have also included changes in research design, by incorporating multiproxy approaches that have benefited from interaction with other disciplines. In this chapter we discuss advances in DNA, osteometry, isotope, and age profile studies as applied to South American camelids and the impact these new results have for the archaeology of South America.
