Abstract
Abstract For many modern reform movements, ijtihād forms an important instrument for the renewal of Islamic law. However, the challenges of modernity evoked a modification of individual legal decision-making of premodern times to a collective and interdisciplinary one (ijtihād jamāʿī). This chapter aims to illustrate the approach of ijtihād jamāʿī employed by many contemporary fiqh institutions. Thereupon it is intended, on the one hand, to examine the nature of ijtihād jamāʿī, its features, and its reception; and on the other, to highlight the relationship between the legal norms developed by contemporary fiqh institutions and the legal methodology practiced by traditional madhāhib.
