Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines the transition from Archaic hunter-gatherer ways of life to the onset and development of settled village communities in key areas along the coast and adjacent highlands of northwestern South America. Focusing on current archaeological data from Ecuador and Colombia, it encompasses the preceramic to early Formative period cultures in both countries. These areas demonstrate considerable diversity in subsistence regimes, plant domestication, paleo-demography, and processes of sedentism leading to settled village life and early social complexity. New archaeological data and interpretations of these processes are summarized within the unifying lens of entanglement theory and path dependency.
