Abstract
Abstract This chapter summarizes archaeological discussions regarding the Late Intermediate period (1100–1450 AD) in the Bolivian highlands and eastern valleys and in the Pacific coastal valleys of northern Chile. On this subject, expansive models that perceived the Titicaca plateau as a development center and its surrounding regions as receiving peripheries were posited mainly between the 1950s and 1980s, However, during the next three decades, those models were confronted by an increasing recognition of regional cultural developments. This process of recognition and definition assumed distinctive forms, both on the high plateau and in the eastern and western slopes of the Andean Cordillera. More recently, the previously defined large regional blocks have been revisited and reconsidered, emphasizing agency at increasingly local scales and the active role of materials in social interaction practices. These perceptions have also been extended to regions scarcely understood before, such as the Amazonian piedmont and the Pacific coast.
