Abstract
Abstract This chapter reviews the variety of theoretical perspectives found in the Oxford Handbook of South American Archaeology (OHSAA). It does so by comparing the theories in it to those found in the Handbook of South American Archaeology, published in 2008, and looking briefly at the larger context of theoretical development in South American archaeology. In that volume, cultural history and cultural evolutionism were the dominant perspectives. Unsurprisingly, while cultural history remains important in the OSHAA, cultural evolutionism has declined in importance and has been replaced by modern theories that reflect a desire to decolonize the field and be inclusive of Indigenous voices and perspectives and by analyses of political repression viewed through the lens of archaeology.
